Home Remedies for Oily Hair

Have oily hair? Tired of it constantly being greasy, and feeling like you need to take yet another shower half way through the day? Perhaps you were born with extra oily follicles, but there is no need to live with the embarrassment. There are many home remedies available to help alleviate your oil issue and lead you to a smoother, lighter head of hair.

Shampoo

If you have oily hair, you should shampoo often. Some people may say that it is healthier to wash your hair every few days rather than daily. And, while this may be true, it won’t get rid of your problem! Don’t worry about over shampooing, especially if you have the right products. Many times shampoos have a lot of extra additives and conditioners added to them. If your shampoo is a thick, creamy substance, it may be one of them. Creamy shampoos often are full of wax, which definitely weighs down your hair. Instead look for clear shampoos, and speak with your stylist about the best product for you. Also, make sure you rinse thoroughly! No product will leave hair un-oiled if it isn’t rinsed out properly.

Cupboard Remedies

You may not realize it, but you most likely have many oil-reducing products right in your kitchen cupboard. Unless you are a poor college student, that is. Cider vinegar can be a great solution to oily hair. Simply add ¼ cup of the vinegar to a tub of warm water. Soak your hair in the solution and rinse with warm water. Or, you may choose to spray it on your hair an then rinse out. Either way it will help get rid of waxy buildup. Lemon juice is also great at cutting out grease. That’s why it’s used in so many soaps! Simply soak your hair in a mixture of equal parts lemon juice and water. Rinse out and enjoy your oil-free hair!

Other Miscellaneous

Make sure you aren’t brushing your hair too often. Every time you bring your brush through a full stroke in your hair, you are actually distributing oil from your scalp throughout the rest of your curls. You can still brush your hair of course, just don’t do it too often! It also will help reduce split ends. You can also rinse your hair with alcohol to get rid of oily hair. Alcohols have the amazing effect of drying into thin air, and will help reduce oils. You also can wash your hair with tomato juice to tone down the grease. To do this, take a fresh tomato and grind down until you are able to obtain the juice. Massage into your scalp and enjoy the aftermath.
