Four Home Remedies For Sunburns

Most people go out into the sun to enjoy the weather, have fun with their family and maybe even get a tan. After long hours outside, forgetting to reapply sunblock, not bringing sunblock or swimming all day, you are sporting not a tan, but an ugly sunburn. They’re painful, they itch and have the worst burn that even putting on clothes hurts. Below are some home remedies to treat your sunburn.

Pickle Juice/Vinegar

It sounds gross but it is a very good home remedy for any burn. The idea of putting pickles on your skin is very appalling but it does work. If you take a spray bottle and put one part water and one part vinegar/pickle juice you can spray small sprits all over the affected area and the burn will vanish. Fortunately, if you don’t want to walk about smelling like a pickle or like vinegar you can put a couple of glugs of vinegar in a cool bath and soak in it. This home remedy for sunburns has been used before sunburn ointment was ever thought of.

Black Tea Bags

Sweet tea is not the remedy. Sugar will dilute the effects the black tea can give your skin. Black tea has antioxidants in it that will actually help your skin heal. While drinking black tea will improve resistance to UV radiation, when a couple of tea bags are added to a cool bath it will take the burning sensation out of your skin along with healing the burn itself. For people who fix sweet tea all the time, this is a perfect home remedy for sunburns.

Milk/Yogurt

Once again, this is probably sounding more and more appalling. However, a small swipe of milk or yogurt on the affected area can relieve the burn. Cold compresses with milk and yogurt soothes the pain, itching and burning. This is a “wonder food” that will actually soothe all symptoms of the sunburn. Whenever you use this home remedy for sunburns make sure that it is cool, not cold. Cold will make it feel like the sunburn is still burning after the milk or yogurt dries.

Manuka Honey

This is the best of all home remedies for sunburns. Manuka honey is antibacterial, can help heal wounds and helps the skin re-epithelize, which is the growth of new epithelial skin cells. Manuka honey also has an anti-inflammatory property which not only will heal the sunburn but you won’t look so “puffy” from the sunburn.

Any of these products can be used for sunburns. They are inexpensive, you can find them in almost any grocery store and they may be just laying around in your cupboard. However, the best remedy is Manuka honey because of the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
