4 Home Remedies for Fleas

Everyone loves their pets, and they often think of them as part of their own family. None of them, however, love it when their pets get fleas. Fleas can be terrible for not only the pet, but for the entire family. They are microscopic bugs that can get hidden in pet’s fur, in the fabric of furniture, and in the carpet. These tiny pests can cause rashes and infected skin on both pets and people. There are some medications to prevent pets from getting fleas, and there are also some chemicals used to get rid of fleas. Unfortunately, most of these chemicals used to prevent and get rid of fleas are often not safe for either pet or person. Thankfully, there are some safer home remedies that people can use to get rid of and prevent fleas.

Wash Pets

Dogs need to be bathed every day to help prevent the spread of fleas. Cats don’t require regular washing unless they already have fleas. Lavender is a natural flea repellant, and adding a few drops of it to the pet’s baths can help keep fleas away.

Homemade Flea Spray

Since most of the store bought flea repellant spray have harmful chemicals and toxins in them, they are not very safe to spray on pets or in the house. That is why a homemade flea spray has been created as a home remedy for getting rid of fleas. To make this safe flea spray, mix two drops of lavender oil with two drops of cedar wood oil and 12 ounces of water. This mixture can be poured into an inexpensive spray bottle. This should be sprayed on the pet three times a day for about two weeks to be able to get rid of the fleas.

Brewer’s Yeast

Another powerful home remedy for preventing the spread of fleas is brewer’s yeast. This is an inexpensive substitution for some of the more harmful products. Brewer’s yeast is a natural repellant, and it can be given as a daily oral supplement for pets. Small breed dogs and cats should take 1 teaspoon of this a day, and medium to large breed dogs should take 1 tablespoon of this each day.

Getting Rid of Fleas in the Home

When fleas have already been spotted on pets, they are more than likely already all over the house. All of the fabric in the house should be washed as soon as possible. This includes pillow cases, blankets, sheets, dog beds, dog toys, upholstery, and carpets. A high powered vacuum cleaner should be used on carpets to be able to pick up any fleas or eggs they might have left in the carpet. Sprinkling salt on carpet and fabrics before and after vacuuming can be another inexpensive and safer way to get rid of fleas in the home.
