Some people have grown up hearing people say that
they have swimmer’s ear after getting out of a pool, thinking that they would
get it from going swimming too. However, swimmer’s ear is actually a bacterial
infection in the outer ear canal. This infection can occur when a thin layer of
skin inside the ear canal gets damaged by Q-tips or ear buds. It can also occur
when extra water is left inside the ear canal causing bacteria to form, so
swimming could be the cause of some people’s swimmer’s ear. It doesn’t happen
to everyone who goes swimming, however, so children should not be scared to
have fun in the water. Swimmer’s ear is not a serious infection, and it can be
treated with medications. If it is not treated quickly, then there are more
serious conditions that can be caused by the infection. There are also some
home remedies that help treat the symptoms of swimmer’s ear and to help speed
up the recovery of what the doctor prescribes.
Hot
Garlic Oil
A few drops of hot garlic oil into the ear can help
clean it out, and speed up the recovery of the swimmer’s ear infection. To make
this oil people should; let pieces of grated garlic soak in a bowl of olive oil
overnight, strain the garlic and remove in the morning, then heat the oil in
the microwave for about 15 seconds and test on the palm to make sure it is not
too hot. This can then be used with a dropper to put the drops in the ear.
White
Vinegar
White vinegar solution is another home remedy that
can help speed up the recovery of the infection, and it can help with the
side-effects like pain and itchiness. To make this solution, people just need
to mix a few drops of white vinegar into a small cup of water. White vinegar
mixed with rubbing alcohol can speed up the recovery of the infection.
Heat
Therapy
Putting a heating pad or hot wash cloth around a
water bottle onto the affected ear can help take the pain out of the earache.
People just need to make sure that the heat is not too hot.
Mineral
Oil
Mineral oil is a great home remedy for preventing
swimmer’s ear from happening when people go swimming. They just have to place a
little onto both ears as to not allow enough water to get inside the ear canal
and cause the infection.
