4 Home Remedies for Weeds

Home gardens are becoming more and more popular for Americans everywhere. People have wanted to start growing their own vegetables to add some organic foods to their diet, and they have also started adding more beauty to their yards with flowers. One thing that has been known to ruin anyone’s garden fun is weeds. These pesky little things can grow all over the garden and all through the yard. They can ruin the plants and flowers that have been planted, and they are often very hard to get rid of. It takes a very long time to have to pull these awful things out of the ground, and most of the chemicals sprayed on weeds to get rid of them are harmful to the rest of the garden and yard. Thankfully, there are some safer home remedies that can be used to get rid of weeds.

Newspaper

A rather strange material that is used as a home remedy to get rid of and prevent weeds from getting into the garden is newspaper. To prevent weeds from being able to grow, gardeners should line their garden ground with torn newspaper and add water. After this, the soil and mulch can be added. This special product can also be added to a garden that already has weeds and other plants in it. Gardeners just have to line the garden with the torn newspaper going around the plants and flowers and over the weeds, add water, then cover it with more soil and mulch. This will prevent sunlight to reach the weeds, therefore not allowing them to grow and eventually they will die.

Boiled Water

Another safe alternative to chemicals that kill weeds is to use boiling water. After boiling the water on the stove, carefully take it outside and pour it onto the weeds. The water will kill the weeds from the root without using harmful toxins that can also destroy the grass. This is a great method to use on areas around sidewalks, but people have to be careful about pouring the boiling water around other plants, because it can also kill them.

Rock Salt

A home remedy for killing weeds that might take a little longer than others to work is by sprinkling rock salt at the base of the weeds. This is a lot less harmful than using other chemicals, and they destroy the weeds at their roots. This method is dependent on having the salt stay on the base of the weeds until the root is destroyed, so they should not be near other plants that need to be watered frequently.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is another weed killer that is non-toxic and also inexpensive. When the white vinegar is poured onto the base and the leaves of the weeds, it can kill them within a week. Gardeners who need to kill weeds in areas near other plants should spray the white vinegar on stream selection of a spray bottle at the base and leaves of the weeds.
